Bill splitter

Splitting by room size or income means each person pays the same share of the total as their share of the space or the earnings. Rooms of 14, 12 and 9 m² split £1,500 rent as £600.00, £514.29, £385.71.

How we calculate this

For an equal split, we divide the total by the number of people. For room size or income, we add up everyone’s figure and give each person the same share of the cost as their share of that total.

Many households mix methods: rent by room size, and bills like energy and broadband split equally. Use the calculator once for each.

Each person pays = total × their figure ÷ everyone’s figures added up

Questions people ask

What’s the fairest way to split rent?

There’s no single answer. Splitting by room size is common when rooms differ a lot, and some households add a little extra for an en suite or the biggest room. The fairest split is one everyone agrees to before moving in.

Should couples split bills by income?

Some do, so each person pays the same percentage of what they earn. Others split equally and keep the rest separate. It’s worth agreeing what counts as shared.

Are we all responsible for the whole rent?

On a joint tenancy, usually yes: the landlord can ask any tenant for the full rent if someone doesn’t pay. Check your tenancy agreement.
