How we calculate this
A percentage is a number out of 100. To find a percentage of something, divide it by 100 and multiply by the percentage.
To take a percentage off, multiply by 1 minus the percentage, so 20% off is × 0.8. To add one on, multiply by 1 plus the percentage, so a 20% rise is × 1.2.
Questions people ask
How do I work out 20% of a number?
Divide by 5, or divide by 10 and double it. 20% of £45 is £9.
How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
If something is 25% off and then a further 10% off, is that 35% off?
No. The second discount comes off the already-reduced price, so it is 32.5% off in total: × 0.75 then × 0.9 = × 0.675.
How do I take VAT off a price?
Not by taking off 20%. Divide by 1.2 instead. Our VAT calculator does this for you.
