How we calculate this

Your bill is the energy you use multiplied by the unit rate, plus a standing charge for every day of the year.

Ofgem’s typical household uses 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year. These figures were updated in July 2026.

Electricity = kWh × unit rate + standing charge × 365Gas = kWh × unit rate + standing charge × 365Monthly = yearly total ÷ 12

Questions people ask

What is the average energy bill in the UK?

At the October to December 2026 price cap, a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit pays about £1,724 a year. Your bill depends on how much you actually use.

What is a standing charge?

A fixed daily charge for being connected, whatever you use. Under the current cap it is 54.83p a day for electricity and 29.68p for gas, together about £308.46 a year.

Why is my Direct Debit higher than this?

Suppliers spread your yearly cost evenly, so you pay more than you use in summer and less in winter. Your Direct Debit can also include money towards a debt or a credit buffer.

Does the price cap limit my total bill?

No. It caps the unit rates and standing charges, not the total. The more you use, the more you pay.
