Square metre calculator

Multiply the length by the width in metres to get square metres. One square metre is 10.76 square feet, so a 4 × 3 m room is 12 m² or 129.2 sq ft.

For an L-shape, work out each rectangle and add them up.

For several areas the same size, such as tiles or panels.

How we calculate this

We turn your measurements into metres, work out the area for the shape, then convert it to other units.

We use the exact UK legal definitions: a yard is 0.9144 metres, a foot is a third of a yard (0.3048 m) and an inch is a 36th of a yard (2.54 cm).

Questions people ask

How do I work out square metres?

Measure the length and width in metres and multiply them. A room 4.2 m long and 3.5 m wide is 4.2 × 3.5 = 14.7 m². If you measured in centimetres, divide each by 100 first.

How many square feet in a square metre?

10.7639. To turn square metres into square feet, multiply by about 10.76. To go the other way, divide by 10.76.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, work out the area of each and add them together.

Do I add or multiply the length and width?

A common slip is to add the length and width together. Area always multiplies: 4 m by 3 m is 12 m², not 7.
