How we calculate this
We work out the area of your lawn, add 5% for trimming around edges and borders, then divide by the area of one roll. We always round up, because you can't buy part of a roll.
For a circle, we use the diameter (the distance straight across). For other shapes, split the lawn into rectangles, add up their areas and enter the total.
Questions people ask
How big is a roll of turf?
In the UK, a standard roll is about 610 mm wide and 1640 mm long, which is about 1 m². Check with your supplier, as some sell larger rolls or sell by the square metre.
How much extra turf should I order?
Rolawn recommends at least 5% more than your measured area. That covers trimming around edges, curves and borders, and small measuring mistakes. Go up to 10% for curved or irregular lawns.
How do I measure an irregular lawn?
Split it into simple shapes, such as rectangles and circles. Measure each one, add up the areas and enter the total using "I know the area in m²". Measure in metres, to the nearest 10 cm.
Can I use this for artificial grass?
You can use the area to order, but artificial grass is sold in rolls of set widths (often 2 m or 4 m) cut to length. Plan the layout so joins are as few as possible, which can mean buying more than the area alone suggests.
